"All you need is a home computer and an internet connection." Starting an online business usually requires purchasing a domain name, or you can start out on a web page offered through another site, normally for free. Trying to research information about starting an online business is a bit more difficult and there are some scary things to watch out for. When a link is clicked, a page is brought up for you to fill out. This page includes your email address, home address and phone number. After several emails, you sometimes learn that these emails are just spam, and you're not getting any information at all about the online business. Do your research from the Better Business Bureau to find out which ones are truly legitimate. People are often targeted to stay at home and work. Retirees and stay-at-home moms are some. A lot of new moms subscribe to baby and parenting magazines and, if you've ever looked in the back, there are numerous ads for starting an online business. The ads include phone numbers to call, and when you call there's an automated message to leave your information so that someone can get back to you. They also include web addresses, which, when you go to the site, there's limited information but plenty of spaces to fill in your personal information so that someone can get back to you. This isn't to say that all online business opportunities are a hoax. One thing is certain. When starting an online business, you need to spend money to make money. Data entry, taking surveys, and reading emails all sound wonderfully easy and quick to do. For a start up fee, you will be given a membership to their URL and your information will be given, and sometimes sold, to other online companies. But don't worry - you'll make hundreds a day! This is where research comes into play. Make sure what you're getting into isn't a hoax, but is a true opportunity for starting an online business, and building it from there. You also need to be aware of what is called a pyramid scheme. This is pretty easy to explain. One person starts their online business and they call others, who, for a small fee, can become employees. These people call other people who pay another small fee and then they call more people. It goes on and on. The only way to make money from the pyramid scheme is to be the originator. And these things are illegal. There are no real services provided, so it can't legally be called a business can it? Know what you're getting into before providing personal information so that you can start an online business the right way and be confident that you will succeed with it. This is because I'm on a traffic kick, testing out new things to bring my website more traffic - something all webmasters want to do. Social bookmarking is one of the top techniques that you can use to promote your website and build more traffic. If you're not involved, it's time to get with the program! Social bookmarking started for me when I joined a few of the top social bookmarking sites. You may think this is all you need to do to get involved, but trust me - there is more to social bookmarking than simply joining the social bookmarking circles! The first thing to do is visit a few of the top social bookmarking sites: Digg, del.ici.ous, Furl, and Yahoo, just for example. You can do a Google search for these to find them if you've never been there before. Then, sign up for a free account with each of these. When signing up for an account, you will have the opportunity to select buttons that you can add to the end of each of your blog posts. This will allow readers of your blog to "Digg" your post over at the Digg social bookmarking site. When someone clicks on your Digg button, it will bring them to the Digg site, where they would login with their account username and password. The blog post or article would then appear as a URL, and the person who clicked "Digg" will have the opportunity to post a comment about your post. This can do nothing but good things for your website. If everyone gives your post a Digg, think of all the links in Digg you will have pointing back to your site. This will certainly increase your traffic when someone goes onto Digg looking for a post on a topic that interests them. This is where I initially went wrong in my social bookmarking efforts. You don't want to stop after just joining these social bookmarking sites and leaving a button on your blog posts for everyone else to find and click. You want to get actively involved in the social bookmarking process by becoming an active member of these sites. What I mean by being "active" is that you want to visit these sites, and find topics of interest to you, or topics that relate to your online business. Once you find other posts on your topic of interest, then you have the opportunity to bookmark, or "favourite" those posts, and add a comment. Doing this can really increase your traffic, as evidenced by my own increasing website stats just by doing this one thing alone. If you "favourite" other people's sites and they "favourite" your site and you each comment on other's posts, then you will soon have a network of links pointing back to your site. This important piece of the social bookmarking puzzle is something I didn't even realize myself until I got involved with my latest social bookmarking site called "Squidoo". Apparently, Google just loves Squidoo at the moment, so I jumped on the bandwagon along with others I know joining the site. The great thing about Squidoo and sites like MySpace is that you can create a "lens" which is just like a mini web page, or landing page that gives visitors to that lens a quick overview of what you have to offer. This will hopefully entice them to click your links and bring you more traffic. I've made darn sure this time that after creating my lens I did not just leave it at that. I have visited other lenses on my topic of interest, added those lenses to my "favourites" list, and sent comments to others in hopes that others will visit my links as well. So far, this has increased my traffic very quickly and I may even reach a personal goal thanks to this technique alone! Next, I am going to try creating more than one lens and link one to the other, which will hopefully entice visitors to read one of my lenses, and then click on to the other, increasing my traffic even more! The thing to watch out for when using social bookmarking sites is that you don't want to be a spammer who is out there just to get your links seen and clicked. As with anything in internet marketing, like forum posts, no one likes someone who is just there to advertise themselves. I liked the style of his email. Lately I've been seeing a lot of emails from honest money making marketers saying "don't pay a thing for programs and ebooks when you can get it all for free somewhere, somehow". Jack was saying that his Friday Traffic Report is one of the best ways to get free, quality, top-notch information. I have been subscribed to Friday Traffic Report since my first days as an honest money making internet marketer, but haven't been keeping up with his blog posts. Well today I finally subscribed to his feed so that I can keep up-to-date with the Friday Traffic Report. Jack gives a good little tip about how to create more traffic with Technorati, so over I went to the Technorati site, where I have made Jack's blog one of my "Favourites" at Technorati, after which I need to follow a few other steps, like posting my honest money making blog on his site. Over at Technorati, I'm in the process of "claiming" my own blog. I typed in my blog URL and next I have to make a blog post - this one - which has the correct Technorati link in it that can be picked up by the search engine spiders, which will follow that link to my honest money making site. So here is the link that will release the search engine spiders after I ping my blog: Technorati ProfileAfter that, I am not sure what happens, but I will keep following the directions both at Technorati and Friday Traffic Report, and you can do this too! Apparently, you can get a lot of traffic through this method alone! So far, I have been adding keyword tags to all of my honest money making blog posts that link to Technorati - another way of generating traffic. I have finally created a lens on Squidoo, the latest social-bookmarking site, a little like MySpace (which I haven't gotten to yet haha!). I didn't know what Squidoo was until I tried it, even though people on the Warrior Forum have been talking about it, and adding their Plug-in Profit Site blurbs to it. Basically, with Squidoo you can create a simple web page to promote your business, your products, your services, your articles, or anything your little heart desires. It's another form of advertising really, and the more exposure you get, the better off you are. If you want to create your own Squidoo page to promote your business, just go to Squidoo and you can browse the site to get an idea of what's there and what people add to their lenses. Then you can follow the directions to create your own lens. It's an easy step-by-step process really, although there are a few things I don't like about it. For example, it's really easy but it has taken me a good part of my day today to get the content and links organized that I wanted to put on there. Well you do have to put a little effort in, as with everything I suppose! What I didn't like so much was the Save function, and the Preview function which seemed a little off, and the HTML editor is pretty basic. But that's what this is all about : Basic. You just create a title for your lens, a description, and a body of information. You can edit each thing as you go along. You can then save a draft, and finally you publish your masterpiece in its final version! Squidoo allows others to add comments to your lens. I clicked the Digg and the Delicious links to add my lens there, and my social-bookmarking is on the rise!
