The Good, Bad, and Ugly of Affiliate Marketing

Many people starting an online business today will look to affiliate selling first because it is easiest and requires no effort to bill, package, or send items in the mail. These labor-intensive tasks can all be done through links on their websites to other people's products and services, and those providing the products and services deal with the actual transactions. You just get paid, and it can't get any sweeter than that!

I would have to agree that affiliate selling is a lot of fun and is my preferred way of doing business online. However, affiliate marketers who are desperate for a pretty penny can also be notorious internet scammers.

If you own a website, then you are probably paying a bit of money to keep the site running. Do you not wish you could make some money with the website you work so hard to maintain? Imagine how wonderful it would be if you could turn your hobby into a real business that would not only pay for itself, but even offer you a few extras that could be put to good use for the kids, your family, or that vacation you've always wanted to take!

To a web master, affiliate marketing is almost always the answer to this dilemma. In and of itself, affiliate marketing is a wonderful opportunity to share in the profits of a reputable company by displaying their links and banners, and allowing interested website visitors to check out those sites and perhaps purchase a product. When they do so, the company will offer you a small, or even a large percentage of the sale.

Yet you must also be wary of the affiliate marketing industry because if you're not careful, it may actually jeopardize your good name as a web master. For example, have you ever been surfing the web only to suddenly stumble across a website that touts an amazing nutritional supplement that does it all? Weight loss for the overweight, hair growth for the bald, an increased sexual stamina for those lacking it, and a host of other items that are cured or corrected with a pill after breakfast, lunch and dinner?

Yes, you have to have a sales page to promote your online business, no doubt about it. But be careful not to make false claims and unrealistic promises. If you are promoting a product or service, it's a good idea to have tested the item out for yourself first, so that you can offer an honest review of that product or service.

Similarly, if your newsletter subscribers have purchased an item from you, perhaps you can ask them for an honest testimonial if they were satisfied with their purchase. Honest testimonials are a great thing to add to your sales page, but watch out if they promise miracle cures or outrageous potential earnings. Your testimonials should include the person's name, website, and even contact information in case your prospects want to check on those providing the testimonial.

Some sites will have a copy of a commission check that the web master has posted and suddenly he or she has your undivided attention. The check is small
enough to be realistic yet big enough to have you consider what you could to
with the money and how it could ease the tension at home from lack of
disposable income.

While providing proof of earnings is a great way to capture new prospects, make sure you do your homework and contact the person to ask questions about the business to find out for yourself how legitimate it is.

When you are hooked, the spiel usually involves a site owner who is so
successful that he or she has decided to take on two or three qualified
novices and train them to do the business as well.

This usually means selling the miracle product to your friends and neighbors and then just sitting back and waiting for the money to roll in. What has just happened, in a nutshell, is an affiliate scam that ties your success directly into a multi-level marketing scheme.

Additionally, you will need to post banners on your website. While your links will attract more interested parties to the originator's website, you are meanwhile alienating your friends and family by the other products you are pushing if not directly related to what you are selling.

This is not what affiliate marketing is all about, and it is important that you understand the implications of your putting links or banners of any business on your website. Links and banners can be effective if used correctly, but littering your site with too many, or banners that have nothing to do with your products and services is not a good idea.

A good way to promote your affiliate programs and links is to provide solid and useful content on your site in the form of articles written on your programs and services, and blog posts that provide value to your website visitors.

With so many scams on the internet these days, it's easy to get sucked into programs where you do nothing but lose your hard-earned money. Finding honest money making programs, products, and services can be a bit of a challenge, but if you do your research, you will find the honest, legitimate programs.

Doing your research means asking the online business owner questions about the business through the contact information they provide. You can also do a search for that program on the internet and follow the links. You can join discussion forums to ask questions and get more information, and you can check with the Better Business Bureau to find out if the program you choose is legitimate or not.

Making honest money online is no easy, or quick task. Sometimes it takes a lot of trial and error before you find what works for you. However, there are many ways that you can make good, honest money online, even by just surfing the web.

If you want to make money online, it's a good idea to choose something that you enjoy and are good at. The work involved in building and maintaining an online business is so much easier when you do something you love to do.

There are some obvious ways to make honest money such as selling products or services online and making a profit this way. This works if you have products such as CDs, DVDs, books, antiques, or anything you want to get rid of. You can also find places to buy things cheaply that can be sold for more money, such as buying books cheaply at garage sales and then reselling them online from your own website, or on ebay.

There are other honest money making strategies you can use online to make a profit. For instance, you can place other people's advertisements on your site, and you can make a part of the profits for these ads. Some of the ads will create cash for you whenever they are clicked on, and others will create small amounts of cash just for being on the site.

Another way to make honest money online is to search for online jobs that you can get, such as taking online surveys, or data entry jobs. Some of these small jobs can provide you with quick cash to fund other parts of your business advertising efforts.

Nowadays, you can even get paid for going to different forums and contributing valuable information to the discussions taking place there. If you like to chat online, this is a great way to make money because you are getting paid to do something that you love and might do anyway! Not to mention, when you contribute something valuable to the discussions you are building yourself a good and helpful reputation and establishing trust with those who may become your prospects and customers.

Another great strategy to make money online is to write articles about what you are selling online and post them to article directories and to your blog. This is an effective and free way to build traffic and sales!

Keep in mind that you should not expect to make loads of money online right away. Programs that promise this should probably be avoided and considered scams. Honest money making online is something that requires work, and that's why I call it "honest money making".

Your momentum, business reputation, customer relationships, and finally your online income will build up over time and is something that takes a lot of practice. But once you find your groove, you'll see that honest money making is possible, fun, profitable, and highly rewarding!

Trouble Promoting Your Online Business? : Follow These Hot Tips!

Lately I have been wondering how best to promote my online business. My site seems to be doing well, but I really need an increase in traffic lately. Marketing is an important aspect of any business, and online businesses are no exception. Here are a few tips on how best to promote your home business:

1. Create a business card, and personalize your cards with a company logo. Be sure to include email addresses and website URL on the front, and hand them out to family, friends, and leave them in coffee shops, or wherever you visit.

2. If you sell a product, carry several samples with you. Attach your business card to the front. If you sell a service, then carry a brochure with you to describe that service. When someone asks you "What do you do for a living?" you can simply give a sample along with your contact information so they know how to get more. You'll be surprised how well these "warm market", offline tactics work!

3. Collect email addresses from everyone. Contact information can be as good as money in the bank. You never know who will be interested in your business or what you have to offer so never think it's not worth the effort to get people's information, even those you casually meet on the fly.

4. Start and maintain a monthly newsletter filled with updates and special promotions for your products and services. Send the offers by email and through the regular mail to every address in your database.

5. Learn to write good sales copy. If you don't have time to educate yourself, hire an exceptional copywriter to assist you. Good copy makes a difference between booming business and lost sales. A good service to use can be found at http://www.elance.com.

6. Request testimonials from experts in your line of work, then use them to promote your business. You can also request excellent testimonials from those on your subscriber list who can recommend your business, products, or services, or from those who know you well in online discussion forums.

7. Publish your business in every available marketing directory in your area. The yellow pages and local and international newspapers can be a great way to advertise your online business!

8. Word-of-mouth can make or break a business. Talk up your business when in public and enlist friends and family members to do the same. Next time you get on the elevator with a stranger, or are waiting in line at the grocery store, ask people questions and introduce your business!

9. If you don't have one already, get a website. Keep it low key, professional, easy to navigate, and full of quality content. Don't over-use graphics and flashy plug-ins that slow down the time it takes for your page to load. Spend some time creating a catchy headline or slogan for your business.

Now would be the time to use the copywriter again. List your web site with directories like Google, Yahoo, and MSN. Make sure you read the web master's guidelines and ensure that your website conforms to the search engine's terms of service.

10. Get the word out about your business online by joining discussion forums related to your area of business. Post links back to your website and exchange links with other businesses that compliment your service. Avoid associating your site with fly-by-night or shady businesses. Only allow your links to be posted on high quality, reputable sites.

Only post links on your site to businesses or websites that you have researched thoroughly. Better to do reciprocal link exchanges with sites that have a page rank the same or higher than your own. This can improve your page ranking and help you move up on the search engine results page.

11. When advertising in your local newspaper, or even online, make sure your ads appear "above the fold". Check into hiring a professional speaker to read a specially prepared script advertising your business (once again, consult that excellent copywriter) and have your new radio commercial played during prime listening times. If you can only afford a few minutes of radio time, it is still a good investment.

As you can see, offline promotion for your online business is something that many online business owners ignore, but when you think of how many more prospects you can reach offline when most online business owners target online prospects, your list of leads will be that much greater!
