Well before throwing our arms up in the air, we must remember that the customer comes first, and that a website cannot just be a static, unchanging piece of work. Our websites have to engage the customer, entice them, and they must be interactive. Our web businesses are not mechanical slot machines, as much as we might like them to be! Engaging our customers means that we are not only providing them with quality content, but we are giving them a chance to reply, respond, question, and comment on our site and what we have to offer. One way to do this is by including a feedback or email form that allows them to send their questions and comments back to you. If it is easy for them to contact you, and they receive quality assistance and replies from you, then they will feel more like you are someone they can trust. You can establish trust and credibility by providing your name, address, phone number, and email address, as well as posting your picture and some information about yourself. It also helps to offer a money-back guarantee. There is software available that allows you to capture information about your customers. It will categorize them so that you know what they bought, and what other similar products or services you have that you can also entice them into purchasing. Keeping track of your website statistics and what your customers are doing on your site is crucial for you to know where your sales and visits are or are not coming from and why. You've been blessed with a good character, communication, and sales pizzazz! For the rest of us, bringing in the sales is not so easy. Not only were we blessed with every skill-set in the world except for communicating with our clients, but we have chosen a home-based business where we work alone, rather than in the corporate world where it is more of a necessity to converse with others on a daily basis. Due to the isolation that working at home can create, some of us lose the one skill that if we possess it, could make us millions - or if we don't, could make us only pennies. Having and maintaining good conversational skills is the foundation for building relationships and a solid, successful business. Lucky for us, these skills can be learned! A person with good conversational skills comes across as being more confident and competent, which can get them ahead in business. Customers want to do business with people they like, who are easy to talk to, and easy to get along with. Those without these skills may be more prone to rejection by customers who become uneasy with this salesperson's lack of confidence in promoting their own products or services. If you can't answer your client's questions, they will likely go elsewhere. You don't want to lose sales like this. You want to be able to connect with your clients, draw them in, be friendly, listen to them, care about their needs, and entice them into purchasing a product or service that will benefit them in some way. So what can the home business recluse do to get out of his/her shell? Practice talking and listening to other people, not only in business settings, but in your day-to-day lives. Make the first move in starting a conversation with someone instead of waiting for someone to approach you. Introduce yourself instead of waiting to be introduced. I know that sounds scary for some people, but as with everything in life, practice makes perfect, and those who take risks get ahead! So what if you are rejected? You will never build a relationship or make a sale in the first place if you don't take a risk! One of the best ways to gain a new customer for life is by talking on the phone, or going on business coffees or lunches and simply chatting with your clients. This gives you a chance to really show them who you are, that you are real, and that you care about who they are and what their needs are. This doesn't have to be stressful if you go to the meeting relaxed, confident, and with a plan about what you want to say, and what to say when there is an awkward silence. When this happens, you really want to take the initiative to fill that dead air and make the client feel comfortable by coming up with something to say to help them get through the conversation. They may be even more uncomfortable than you are, so you have to take charge! Some tips for easing into conversations with potential clients on the phone or in person are to start and end with small talk, use the person's name when speaking to them, make eye contact, use body language to show that you are listening, make a statement, ask a question, and smile! Show the person you care about what they have to say by asking them to tell you more, or asking them how they feel about this or that. If you remember that every conversation you have with someone is an opportunity, then you will be on your way to conversational and business success! Please feel free to make a comment on any of my blog posts by clicking on the title of the article and scrolling down to "Comments". Speaking of my blog, and commenting on blogs, I am wanting to make my blog more user friendly so that people know how/where to leave a comment. I also want to optimize my blog by adding Adsense, and promote my blog better. I have already submitted my blog to several blog directories, but want to rotate my blog on a blog traffic exchange, comment on other people's blogs more often, find out more about Blogsrater, and learn more about this highly effective way of internet marketing. So far I have mostly posted my articles to my blog, but I also want to add more posts such as this one, giving updates on my site's progress and what I'm doing to make my site better and to increase traffic. I have also started posting every other day instead of every day. I was worried this may decrease my amount of traffic but it has done nothing but go up! Stay tuned for another progress report on May 17/06. This will be my 3-month mark in business, and I have some exciting stats to report since the last post! I will also be making some changes to my site's format and adding more information on the Plugin Profit Site, Success University, and Personal Power Team. I have not promoted these on my blog yet, but will try to do more of that as I learn more. I am trying to expand myself to more forums than just the Warrior forum, and working on getting more links to my site. All of these changes are slow and taking time, but they will be done! I have found my membership with Success University so far very valuable. I have just finished my 3rd course and am enjoying the lessons and exams at the end. I have completed one sales course, one is in progress, a time management, and a small talk course! An article will be forthcoming on communication in business! I have also joined the Personal Power Team, a group of 50+ team members who have joined forces into a co-op opportunity to help each other and Success University students on the path to success. I will make more information available as I learn more. Finally, I am starting to look at free advertising methods, like free classifieds, and this may be one reason my stats have shot up lately! If only I had time, I would have my desk in order, my email folders set up, my projects prioritized, not too many sticky notes, my meetings arranged, my phone calls answered, my family in check, my workouts all done, my vacations set, my binders organized, my questions asked and answered, my daily tasks accomplished, my friends taken care of, my work done, my life in balance, my house in order, my problem pile finished, my website fixed, my legs shaved, and my mind all clear by bedtime, if there's even time for sleep! If your life feels somewhat chaotic, have no fear, because there is hope for those who understand time, manage time, and take the appropriate actions to free up time! Time means different things to different people in different circumstances. For instance, I am very slow to get going in the mornings, but after my coffee, I am energized for the rest of the morning, and time flies for me. Then by after lunch, I am very sluggish and feel like the day will never end sometimes. When I work on my business in the evenings, I get a second wind, but feel like I don't have enough time to do everything that needs to be done. In this case, I find it useful to spend money on something that will automate a process for me, such as an article or link directory submitter. However, the more I am learning about doing business online, the more I feel I have to do, and just can't fit it all in. My problem is that I need to relax and realize that I can only do so much. I know that I am working very hard, to the best of my ability and probably beyond, and knowing this helps me remember what's important. That is a key concept in time management: Knowing what the problems are in your planning, and knowing what is really important. Some people don't even start their days or end their days with a plan, but planning can save you hours. If you set priorities and make sure that you are spending your time on those things and not getting distracted by emails, voicemails, meetings, forums, or phone calls, then you are on the right time-management track. Once you know your responsibilities, your goals, your objectives, and your priorities on a daily basis, then you can effectively get things done. If you still feel you have too much, then don't forget to delegate certain tasks to other people, like your colleagues, your kids, or even hire someone to get you organized! A big problem with managing time is that people aren't organized - their physical work space is a mess, or their house is a mess. This leads to feeling overwhelmed. Someone once told me that if your work space is cluttered then your mind is also cluttered, and it's so true! Get started by cleaning up your mess! Take an afternoon when you're feeling sluggish and go through all your papers, notes, and binders, and you will feel much more energized and motivated to get to work. Motivation to work is another problem we all face. When we're not motivated, doing something we're not entirely sure how to do, or there's too much to do, then we tend to procrastinate. The best way to eliminate that problem is by knowing what it is we are avoiding and doing those things first to get them out of the way while we are still feeling energetic. Even when we're stressed for time, some of us will take on too much simply because we have an inability to say "no" to new things coming at us in all directions. We want to impress someone, don't want to look bad, we're friends with someone and don't feel we can let them down, or we are perfectionists and want to over-achieve and get it all done perfectly. These are all things that eat up our time, and force us into a bad pattern of neglecting what is truly important, and forgetting what has to be done immediately, and what can wait. Finally, in planning our days, and weeks, and months, we must never forget our health. Being stressed over lack of time is unhealthy, so we must get enough water, go for a walk, get some fresh air, do something fun, stay focused, and be positive. When we start fresh, with our priorities in place, we will achieve much more, and be more successful both personally and professionally. Here's how I do it: I write an article, create 4-5 versions of it, and sell it for use by others in my same profession. In fact, just that one part of my business generates enough income to fully support myself comfortably. Just about anyone in any profession or business can copy this formula. I write articles for executive coaches and business consultants. They use different versions of my articles in their own newsletters, with their own names in the byline. When they purchase an article, they get reprint rights, but not exclusivity. But since they are in all parts of the country, and the world, they don't bump into others using the same article. They are also free to change the article. This formula can be used in any industry. Let's say you are a veterinarian. You know a lot about pets, and about your vet clinic clients. You can easily write articles that appeal to your customers who are pet owners. You may already write and publish a regular newsletter with articles that appeal to your clients and potential clients. What's to stop you from writing your article to suit the needs of other vets who need to send out a newsletter? You post a brief synopsis of this article on your website for vets, offering it to them for a fee. They buy the reprint rights, and it gets used by hundreds of other vets who want to save themselves time and energy on their own newsletters. That is one way of making money by writing articles on the Web, but here are four more ways, all from the same article. This same article is revised several times in several lengths. It can be sold in three different lengths, for example, 2000 words to form a 4-page newsletter, 1000 words for a 2-page newsletter, and 600-700 words for electronic email ezines. That makes three more ways to sell the same article. You also take that same article, change the title, make it more personal adding your own experiences, including your personal details and website links. You submit it to article directories on the web. This version of your article with your name on it gets picked up - this time for free - by other websites looking for content. Each time another website publishes your article on their site, they link back to your site. The more incoming links you have to your website, the higher value the search engines give you. This means you will start coming up higher in the search engine rankings when people type in key words in Google or one of the other search directories. That is a fifth way to make money from the same article. This technique is more indirect. Your article is being used for free, but the linking power will drive new customers to your site. Finally, you can use this same article, or another altered version of it on your own website and blogs, to attract new clients to you. Having quality content on your site and on your blogs will ensure that readers appreciate your expertise and use your services, or buy your products. Here's a bonus idea for making money from your articles: compile a group of articles about the same topic, format them into a PDF e-book, and sell it on your site. You probably have knowledge and expertise in your own field that others would pay for, in order to have quality content for their own newsletters. This method requires good writing skills, or you can hire a professional editor to help you. It also requires you master the art of marketing on the web in order to reach potential buyers of your articles.
