Unfortunately, if you are one of the many thousands of people looking to earn money online, your beliefs may not be enough. In order to achieve online business success, in fact, you will have to set aside some commonly held myths about Internet marketing or business. Myths are stories passed around in culture that are not true but are often believed without question. Here are 2 common myths that you should question as they may stand in the way to earning money online: 1) If you build it they will come. Many people venture into an online business believing that they just need to build a website on a catchy domain and they will become rich. While in the Internet's early years this may have held some truth, the reality is that with millions of websites on the Internet who will see yours? Internet marketing is all about getting your website, your product, or your business opportunity seen by others. You not only need to build a website (or use someone else's as an affiliate), you have to find a way to let people know it exists in a way that they will visit. 2) The more you spend the more you earn. The majority of successful online business owners probably have a story about believing such a myth when they first started Internet marketing. The truth is people want to believe that their profits will be proportionate to the amount of money invested because that is easy. Almost everyone has a credit card and in North America at least we are not strangers to loading them up to their maximum. And if that is what it takes to earn money online, a little short term pain is well worth it! Sadly, while many venture into Internet marketing to improve their financial situation, their belief in the myth that the more they spend the more they will earn usually puts them into a much worse situation than before. Before long their online business efforts have to survive the new debt load before profits can even be considered. Having said that, once you are earning money online with your Internet business, additional marketing dollars invested wisely will likely help growth. "You have to spend money to make money" is true most of the time but it is also a different kind of statement then the myth we are talking about. Earning more money online then you invest in Internet marketing methods is the goal of every online business but in order to accomplish that you need to be smart with your expenditures. On a limited budget look for free or inexpensive advertising and spend only if you are ready to keep track of your ROI (return on investment). Myths can be helpful. After all, probably one or more of them brought you into the Internet marketing industry in the first place. There are more myths than are described here, of course, but if you figure these two out you stand a good chance of earning money online with your business in spite of the others. If you run a business, online or offline, and you want to attract new customers and keep them coming back, there are a few important qualities you must possess. If you don't, you need to start building them now! First of all, I want to talk about HONESTY. If you want to sacrifice your business and reputation by setting up a business lie, to suck people into getting rich quick as long as they spend all their hard-earned dollars on this or that product or service, then you will discover soon enough that people will lose trust in you and what you have to offer. You will lose their business forever, and the word will spread like wild-fire that your business is a total lie. If there is one quality any good business person must have, it is being honest with customers, potential customers, and of course with business partners. Tell it like it is, do not mislead people about what you know and don't know, don't pretend to be something you're not, and don't make promises you can't keep. When customers are looking for a product or service, they go to a source they can trust, and trust comes from building relationships over time, and telling the truth. It's the only way your business can grow and win. Speaking of trust, it is also built with INTEGRITY. This means that you do what you say you're going to do and act according to your fundamental values. When you fail to do this, you fail at keeping your business contacts and customers. Being a good business person means you are a LEADER with principles, such as honesty and integrity. The point of the game is not to make money. Everyone wants to make money and be successful, but the true underlying purpose for having a business is that you want to serve people - to ask yourself what you can do for your customers or for the affiliates on your team. To be a leader means to be there for them as a support network, an idea generator, an order-taker, a teacher, or a mentor, and to believe in them and what they can do. Obviously this requires that you have a good background and understanding of your business, and this means you belive in PROFESSIONAL LEARNING AND DEVELOPMENT. Your business will quickly stagnate if you are not continually learning new things, and updating your knowledge base. You must keep current, especially with new technologies developing every day, so you can keep your customers abreast of the latest news and changes. This is all part and parcel of delivering good SERVICE to your customers. If you are not there to meet their needs, and in a reasonable amount of time with a courteous attitude, then you can say bye-bye to your customer base! You must have a POSITIVE ATTITUDE, energy, creativity, and a sense of humour and adventure to get you anywhere in business. Negativity will suck you and your business dry, and can lead to failure and quitting when the going gets tough. Something that will help prevent the "I give up" attitude is maintaining BALANCE in your life - physically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually. A good leader can see many different perspectives and does many different things to keep a peaceful inner balance and harmony. They are mindful of their health and fitness. Copyright © Andrew Hansen Here is one of the biggest bunch of crap Adsense theories you will ever hear... To make money with Adsense you need to find the high paying keywords... This is complete garbage. There are some super high paying keywords that pay $30-40-100 a click... So all you need to do is set up a site like that and if you get one click a day you'll be laughing right? WRONG. To create an Adsense site in these markets is insane. Go to Google and do a search for 'web hosting' (a $20-$30 keyword) and see that there is 915 000 000 results for that phrase! All you need is one click but you won't even be able to get one visitor! These expensive phrases are far too competitive and the people who advertise have to pay a lot of money for people to optimize their pages to get them up there so you might be waiting for a long time for your web hosting information Adsense site to start pulling in the dough. Also Google pays lower percentages of the money advertisers pay for these keywords to the actual Adsense publisher because they are aware that the advertiser only wants good leads and if they don't get them they wont advertise with adwords anymore. Ok I could go on but I think you get the idea, FORGET HIGH PAYING KEYWORDS and don't believe anyone who tries to tell you otherwise. Alright so what do you do instead? You need to select a word or words that are not so competitive! I once heard of a guy making $45 000 in 3 months with a 19c keyword! He completely dominated his niche market and got as much traffic as he could handle because his phrase wasn't that competitive. What does competitive mean exactly? Well you want a keyword that has a high number of searches (demand) relative to the number of results pages (supply) in the search engines. ie not competitive but with enough interest that your site will be able to get a decent bit of traffic every month! Next question: How do you find those kind of words? Start looking! Do just what I said, use the keyword selector tool at overture and the Google search engine to compare results to searches. To start out try looking for a word with 2 000 000 or less results and say above 10 000 searches (be flexible with searches though). Also make sure the term has at least a few Adsense ads down the side (not including ebay ones) to make sure people are actually advertising for that term. Everyone needs a break from their work once in a while, so I'm going to take a step back, take a breather, give you a sneak peek of my life as an online business-person so far, tell you how I have been juggling this with my regular 9-5 offline career, and how you can do this too if you want to! I have been thinking about running a web-business for quite a number of years without doing anything about it. Unlike many people who start an online business, who want to quit their jobs and work for themselves, this was not and is not my motivation. While my career is providing me with financial independence, it is perhaps an internal desire to be even more financially independent and in control of my money, for not only the short term, but for my future as well. When I read financial books to get myself on track, I hear time and again how important it is to have multiple sources of income. When you work at a regular job like I do, it is called "earned income", but there are many other sources of income. I have taken it upon myself to learn about how I can best set myself up for a financially healthy future. In addition to my 9-5 career, I have chosen to try and build my "residual income" by owning a web-based business. Before setting up my business, I did a lot of reading on the subject before taking action. Once I found a program I liked that mirrored a lot of the concepts I had already read about, I was finally motivated to take action. Like most people starting out, I wasn't completely aware of the time or monetary investment that running an online business would require. Because I have always been a hard and conscientious worker, it has not been difficult for me to put the hours in that are required to set-up and maintain my business - at least 4 hours per day when you also have an offline career. If you think having a home business is going to free up time for you, think again! Maybe in the long run once you've figured out what needs to be done, you get into a routine, and perhaps buy some time-saving software and a laptop, things might get easier, but expect to work long and hard in the beginning. My offline career is also my source of business funding. Without it, I personally wouldn't take the risk. I've always thought that an online business would be sort of a "side-career". In fact, my web-business is becoming just as much a career as my regular 9-5 job, and requires just as much consistency and maintenance as working 9-5, if not more. I believe this is the attitude you must take to succeed online, that if you start a web-business, you're going to have to put as much, if not more time and energy into it as you would in your regular career. I'm sure you have guessed that this sort of lifestyle can quickly lead to burnout. That's why you must remember that maintaining balance in your life and work and everything you do is of the utmost importance. We all have families, friends, responsibilities, and interests outside of work that cannot and should not be ignored. As the saying goes, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy". There is no doubt that you have to work long and hard, but if you neglect your life outside of work, you will eventually burn out, and you may even quit. I can see myself becoming a workaholic. What I do to prevent this and juggle all of my responsibilities is I set my priorities according to what is healthiest for me. For instance, I workout at the gym, and I spend a lot of time skiing and hiking in the mountains. I refuse to neglect this aspect of my life because I know doing each thing consistently is keeping me healthy, just like working at my business consistently keeps it healthy. We won't get far in business and work without our health as a top priority. I also make time for my family/friends on the weekends by making "time-out" and my relationships a priority. After all, without them, we are nothing! Ask yourself if you have the time and money to run a home business and if you do, set priorities for yourself and your health. Find a schedule, a routine, and a budget that works for you and stick to it. I find it helps to write a to-do list every day and accomplish what's on your daily list if you can. A home business is obviously not for everyone, but with a little planning, it can be done. I admit I am tired and often feel there is not enough time in the days anymore. But I feel great that I am taking steps to achieve that greater financial freedom and control that I seek by building a web-business. It is a tremendous sense of accomplishment! This has not been my experience nor the experience of anyone I have come in contact with through my online endeavours. You need to give yourself at least a year to make an online business work and budget your money accordingly. Too many times I see people ploughing a wad of cash into their businesses and again, expecting instant riches. New marketers also make the mistake of thinking that one marketing strategy will do. Of course some avenues will produce more than others but I have found the best way is to adopt a broad based approach to your online marketing. That means spreading your time and resources over several different methods. I will attempt to outline in this text everything I feel you need to be doing consistently to make a success of your online business. Again I MUST point out that you need to persist in this strategy and spend your money wisely. It amazes me the amount of people who drop out after the first month or two. What do they expect, miracles? You wouldn't ditch an offline business after a month so why would you expect an online enterprise to be any different? If you fail to plan then you plan to fail. Bottom line is, targeted visitors = sales. This is definitely a numbers game and obviously the more targeted visitors you send to your website the more money you make. The concept is simple but you need to maintain a healthy focus to ensure that you stick this out for as long as it takes to make a profit, and progress to financial freedom online. Here are the methods I use to send daily visitors to my sites: 1)Build Your List It's true what they say that the money IS in the list. Most successful online marketers have large lists of targeted prospects that they can send their offers to on a regular basis. Anyone new to this business should begin to build this list immediately. You have to start somewhere and it takes time but it is certainly worth your while to begin now and develop a lasting and trustful relationship with those list members who eventually will feel comfortable in purchasing your recommendations. When trust grows this targeted list will become a virtual money tree and make you cash at will. Some marketers are able to makes $1000s sending an email to their list, which takes little more than a few minutes to write. Can you see the power in this method? I use a couple of different methods, online forms at all my websites encouraging prospects to add their name and email addresses plus I also purchase many of my addresses from other companies that can send me 1000s of emails for affordable prices. These addresses are spam free and can grow my list a lot quicker than I could ever do from my own websites. The more targeted keywords you collect the more visitors you get. The idea is to ensure that you are paying less for visitors on a monthly basis than the sales you make. 3)Google Adwords ( http://www.google.com/ads/ ) Google adwords is similar in principle to PPCSEs in that you pay for your visitors. I suggest you use Wordtracker ( http://www.workathomebiz.info/wordtracker.html ) to accumlate 1000s of keyword phrases. 4)Article Submissions Submitting topical articles is one of the most affordable and at the same time effective marketing strategies I know of. For affordable search engine submission software try Web Position Gold ( http://www.webpositiongolddownloads.com ) Please note: This is a long term strategy, so it will take at least a few months of persistent action to see any results at all. 6)Forum Posting One of the greatest things that happened to me in my online career was being appointed moderator at one on the most popular online internet marketing forums. This has opened up more avenues and opportunities than any other strategy. I suggest you visit the popular, high traffic online forums daily and make it a point of sharing your experiences and giving your advice as often as possible. Get yourself seen! The thing about this method too is that you can have a link pointing to your site in the signature of each post you make. Posting at forums will send daily traffic to your site AND the visitors will be highly targeted. This method can often take months and months before your site will actually show up in the listings, and can be very time consuming. It is becoming outdated as a method of traffic generation. While it is still important to do this, one thing gaining in popularity these days is building and exchanging links with other websites, and making sure your link is on other people's sites, pointing back to your site. It is a free and extremely powerful way of advertising! How do we generate links to our site? One of the ways is through participating in forums. When we do this, we normally include a signature at the bottom of all our posts with a link to our website. When visitors of the forum read a quality post, which offers some valuable information, tips, or help, they are more inclined to click on the link at the bottom of the post, giving you more traffic and potential sales. Another way to spread your links around the internet is to write and submit articles, with your author information at the bottom, including a link to your site. When a publisher reads your article and gets something of value out of it, they may publish your article on their site or in their newsletter, or even just click on your author link, taking them to your site right away. Again, this is free advertising. Normally your articles and links, once published, will stay on the internet indefinitely, providing you with free advertising for life. A blog would work in the same way, in that you make a post with your author information and URL at the bottom of the post. You can also make comments on other people's posts, leaving your link behind on other people's websites. Reciprocal linking is one popular linking method. This means that you exchange links with other websites. If you link to their site, they will link to your site - a win-win situation for both. This can be done manually, or with special linking software like Link Machine that automates the process and saves you time. You want to link to sites that have similar content to yours. Linking to your competitors can be a good thing because their website content is similar to yours. However, you risk possibly losing a sale to one of them if they click on that link instead of yours. One-way linking, where you don't have to exchange links, but can just leave yours, is perhaps the better way to go. Posting in forums, writing and submitting articles, and blogs are good ways to get one-way links pointing back to your site. You can also submit your URL to various web directories for free, or a small fee, either manually or with special software like Link Directory Submitter to automate and speed up the process. There are millions of web directory sites, so the number of links you can submit pointing back to your site are practically infinite. One last thing: Don't forget to be consistent with every action you take, i.e. Contribute to forums, write articles and blogs, and submit your links regularly! Consistency in the end is what produces results! To those just starting out with their dream to have their own business, but no real talent or creativity yet, it is the perfect 'foot in the door'. What is an affiliate program? An affiliate program is a company that has a product and/or service to sell. They offer to let affiliates join the program and provide them with their own identification or member number, give them personalized marketing tools, such as a website, 'splash page', banners, and sales copy, etc. The affiliate is not an employee, but is a private contractor in a sense. As such, they are not paid a salary and are responsible for the cost of their advertising efforts done on behalf of the program. If the affiliate makes a sale, they are given a percentage as a commission. The affiliate program provides front-end sales and customer support, payment processor, inventory, order fulfillment, shipping and handling and back-end customer support, (refunds, etc.). What they get in exchange for allowing the affiliate to offer the company's product and paying them a commission, is that they are gaining greater exposure - free advertising and marketing which is paid for by the affiliate. In addition to the affiliate having a product to sell and receiving a commission, the affiliate is also usually eligible to receive commissions for referrals of other affiliates to the program. Sometimes this arrangement is referred to as multi-level marketing, for obvious reasons. Most legitimate companies that are sales related have this same type of structure. This is a win-win situation for all concerned. This residual income is different from a one-time sale of the product or service itself. The residual income concept is particularly conducive to 'building' a business, in that you can continue to derive income from work that you do once. Of course as with anything, there will be recidivism, so this doesn't mean you can ever rest on your laurels. You must continue to take consistent action in order to maintain whatever level of income you require.
